The disadvantages of prosthetic valves widened the use of aortic homograft valves in the surgical management of aortic valvular disease. Many methods are used for homograft valves to maintain the viability and durability at optimal levels. In this study rabbit aortas were examined by biochemical methods for their viability in different solutions. 3 group with 7 rabbits in each were studied and the groups were determined by the harvesting time of their aortas (0 - 12 - 24 hours). Each group were placed in two different antibiotic nutritional media and the measurements of pH, glucose, and lactate levels were made in 0 - 8 - 24 - 48 and 168. hours. The determination of glucogene level in the aortic tissue was made in 0 and 168. hours. All solutions were studied microbiologically. Finally we concluded that the lactate level and the amount of the glucose consumption of the nutritional media are important viability criterions and tissue viability is decreasing as the preservation time increases.
