Schwannoma originating from nervus vagus in the upper mediastinum: a case report

Schwannomas which are frequently seen in posterior mediastinum are bening tumors of peripheral nerve sheath. Thoracic schwannomas generally arise from the intercostal nerve. Thoracic schwannomas arising from different neural structures are extremely rare. A 56-year-old female was admitted with the complaint of cough and dispnea. Posteroanterior chest radiograph showed right-sided tracheal compression. Chest computed tomography scan revealed a solid mass in the upper mediastinum adjacent to the posterolateral wall of trachea, extending into the thorax. Therafter, muscle-sparing thoracotomy was performed. The lesion was excised totally. Histopathologic diagnosis was reported as schwannoma. In this report, we present a case with schwannoma which was found in a rare location and originated from an unusual neural structure.
