On patients with chronic renal failure, dialysis is necessary in order to survive until renal transplantation.Hemodialysis is the most preferred method and creation of an A-V fistula facilitates the procedure. However, the technical pitfalls like erroneous anastomosis technique and site, conditions like diabetes mellitus and hypercoagulopathies encountered often on patients with chronic renal failure, adversely affect the success rate of the operation. We retrospectively reviewed results of early and late follow-up on 182 patients operated for arteriovenous fistulas between 1996 and 1999(August) for risk factors and compared them with the literature.
