BLUNT INJURY TO THE SUBCLAVIAN ARTERY: CASE REPORT

Although they are rare, subclavian artery injuries carry a high rate of mortality and morbidity. Nonpenetrating injuries differ from the penetrating injuries by affecting the mid and the distal portion of the vessel. We report on two male patients aged 27 and 29 who were admitted to the emergency department of our hospital following blunt trauma. The arterial pulses were absent in the right upperextremity in both patients. They underwent doppler and angiographic evaluation. Angiography revealed a 5 cm long thrombotic segment in the distal portion and a 3 cm long thrombotic segment in the mid portion of the subclavian artery in two patients,respectively. The brachial plexus was injured in both patients. Subclavian-axillary artery bypass and right carotid-subclavian artery bypass with 6 mm polytetraflowrethylene (PTFE) graft were performed, respectively. Both patients had an uneventful recovery.
