Despite over 500-years of lung resection, history, anatomic lung resections have been succesfully performed only since the second half of the 20th century. Several bronchial closure techniques have been developed along with the evolution of lung resections. Some of these techniques are still being used today. In this article, manually performed bronchial closure techniques were reviewed in the light historical background, excluding the stapler closure. Success rates and general principles of various bronchial closure techniques were discussed.
