The Role of The Asbestos and Other Fibres in The Aetiology of Malignant Mesothelioma

Nowadays, the role of asbestos in the aetiology of malignant mesothelioma has been proven by various studies. In this study, 30 malignant mesothelioma cases were examined for asbestos-like bodies. Fibrilary bodies were seen in 13 cases. Preserved tissue samples were burned to ash by appropiate techniques to understand the nature of these completely. Apropriate combined spectrum of silisium, magnesium, sodium, calcium and ferrum that are known to be present in different kinds of absestos, were observed in 3 cases by qualitative analysing with Scanning Electron Microscopy Energy Dispenser Spectrometry (SEM EDS). We supposed that other non-asbestos fibres that can be seen by light microscope in routine histologic sections, might have an important role in the aetiopathogenesis of malignant mesothelioma, as asbestos.
