In this study, we evaluated incidence and mortality rate of postoperative gastrointestinal complications. Between January 1990 and February 1997, 1479 patients underwent aortocoronary bypass procedure in our center, all operated by the same surgical team. Sixteen of them (%1.08) have developed postoperative gastrointestinal complications. The overall mortality rate among these patinets wes %25 (4/16).

Increased mortaliy rates were detected among patients who needed per or postoperative IABP (3/4-0/12; p<0.007) or vazopressing agent support (4/4-1/12; p<0.007), who had prolonged intubation period (3/4-0/12; p<0.007) and were 65 and older (p<0.01).

Although most patients with gastrointestinal complications following cardiac surgery can be treated well, especially patients who needed per or postoperative IABP or vasopresing agent support, who had prolonged intubation period, and elderly ones carry a higher risk of mortality.
