MYOCARDIAL PROTECTION HAS BEEN ONE THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF CARDIAC SURGERY

Myocardial protection has been one of the most important aspects of cardiac surgery. In this double-blind, plasebo controlled study, trimetazidine which is suggested to continue aerobic glicolysis in ischemia, was shown to improve CKMB levels in early postoperative period. Mean CKMB levels were 36.8 ± 10.58 U/L in the study group and 51.7 ± 7.64 U/L in the control group at 6th hours after the operation. These levels increased to 46.1 ± 7.83 and 55.8 ± 6.94 U/L respectively at 12th hours, and decreased to 39.1± 9.35 U/L and 46.6 ± 5.73 U/L at 24th hours. These results suggest that trimetazidin reduces myocardial damage in patients undergoing coronary artery graft surgery.
