Free oxygen radical contribute to atherosclerosis via toxic effect on vessel wall, as they enhance hypoxia distal to arterial occlusion via hemolysis. In this study, we aimed to compare lipid peroxidant capacity between the control and the atherosclerotic group, which is a canditate for peripheral revascularization.

Blood samples (10 ml) from control and patient groups were centrifuged (2000/min) in order to obtain plasma. Plasma and erythrocyte lipid peroxidation levels were measured using the spectrophotometric method, vitamine E levels by Qualife ML method and erythrocyte GSH levels by the method described by Beutler et al. Statistical evaluation of the results of both groups were effectuated by student’s t-test.

Plasma and erythrocyte lipid peroxidation levels were found to be higher and vitamine E and erythrocyte GSH levels, lowen, in the patient group compared to the control group the differences were statistically significant.

The results of our study reveal increased oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant capacity in patients with peripheral vascular disease. In our point of view, antioxinats may help in the relief of symptoms by increasing antioxidant capacity in the peripheral vascular patient group.
