Extensive experimental and clinical investigations which were recently reviewed failed to produce a satisfactory tracheal replacement. Reconstruction of segmental defects of trachea might be classified as 1. primary end-to-end anastomosis, 2. replecement by tracheal homolog graft or allograft, 3. replacement by autogeneous tissue graft and 4. replacement by prosthesis.

This study was performed to compare the methods for tracheal reconstruction (end-to-end anastomosis and by homolog graft). Tracheal healing was studied at two rabbit groups (n= 20) after tracheal reconstruction. After sacrification macroscopic and microscopic examinations of tracheal anastomosis region and measurements of tracheal internal diameter were performed.

As a resul; when small segments are involved, the primary end-to-end anastomosis is the ideal procedure for tracheal reconstruction. The replacement of trachea by homolog graft is satisfactory but this should be evaluated for revascularization and the long term survival.
