Purpose:

This study was carried out in rats applied global cerebral ischemia, using four vessels occlusion method. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of flavonoids to prevent the injury after reperfusion in ischemic tissue.

Materials and methods:

Three groups were constituted as the group 1 (control group), the group 2 (ischemia-reperfusion group) and the group 3 (ischemia-reperfusion after flavanoid treatment). In all the groups, malonyldialdehyde and glutathion peroxidase activity levels and histopathologically celluler structures were evaluated in cerebral tissues obtained after procedure.

RESULTS:

While malonyldialdehyde levels significantly increased in the group 2 compared to the controls, the increase ın the group 3 was not significant. GSH-Px activity levels were significantly increased in the group 2 (p<0.01). It was shown that the cells were histopathologically protected in the group 3.

Conclusion:

Our findings concluded that flavonoids were effective to diminish lipid peroxidation after reperfusion.
