Aortic clamping on abdominal aorta may predispose to lung injury. The aim of this study was to determine whether ischemic preconditioning (IPC) could have any effect on lung injury in the animal model of lower torso ischemia-reperfusion (IR). Twenty-five wistar albino rats were randomized into three groups. In IR group (n=10), ischemia reperfusion injury was induced by infrarenal aortic clamping for 3 hours and reperfusion for 1 hour. In IPC group (n=10), the ischemia-reperfusion was preconditioned with three brief periods of 5 min. ischemia and 5 min. reperfusion. Control group (n=5) animals were sham operated without vascular occlusion. In IPC group, there are significantly higher neutrophil infiltration in the lungs (neutrophil counts: 57.6±15.9 in IPC group, 31.2±6.2 in İR group, p<0.0001) and edema (mean edema score: 2+ in IPC group, 1.7+ in İR group, p<0.002). It is concluded that IPC before the aortic occlusion increase the neutrophil sequestration and augments the lung injury process.
