Aspergilloma: Surgical Treated 26 Cases

Aspergilloma is diagnosed in the etiology of some patients who are treated in thoracic surgery clinics because of haemoptysis. It is an opportunistic infections developing on the basis of a chronic infection mainly tuberculosis. Twentysix aspergilloma cases were operated at Yedikule Chest Surgery Centre 1., 2., and 3. Surgical Clinics between 1988-1998. Five were women and 21 male with a mean age of 41,5 (17-59). Twentytwo tuberculosis (84,6%), 1 emphysematous lung, 1 hydatid disease, 1 operated hydatid disease and 1 lung cancer were detected in the etiology. In 9 cases sputum examination, and serologic tests, in 2 postbronchoscopic lavage and in 10 cases transthoracic needle aspiration supported the diagnosis of aspergilloma. In 22 patients abnormal radiology was present. The diagnosis was made only after postoperative pathologic examination in 4 cases. The mortality was 3,8% and morbidity 23% in patients of whom 21 underwent anatomic resection and 5 wedge resection.
