Koşuyolu Kalp ve Damar Hastanesi - İstanbul
In a period between February 1985 - May 1992, 5168 open heart procedures were perfor- med at the Koşuyolu Heart and Research Hospital. Of these procedures 1963 were cardiac valve related operations and 1064 were isolated or mixed mitral valve lesions. In 502 of these patients, mitral valve replacement (MVR) was performed using 8 different types of mechanical prosthetic valves.

In this series the early mortality is 4.9% (25 patients). A total of 406 patients (81%) ,have been followed up for 3.811.3 years, late mortality is 5.9% (24 patients). Thromboembolic inci dents (7.8%), prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) (4.9%), hemorrhage (2.9%), paravalvular leakage (0.7%) and hemolysis (0.2%) were the encountered complications. In 24 patients redo valve surgery was performed because of thrombotic prosthesis dysfunction, PVE, para valvular leakage, and extensive hemolysis.

Comparison of early and late mortality and postoperative functional capacities has not shown any superiorities of one type of mechanical prosthesis over another.
