In this study, we measured the acute phase reactant C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in the blood samples of 2 group of patients with cardiac disease in order to demonstrate the inflammatory component in unstable angina.
Our study group consisted of 54 patients; 30 patients with unstabel angina (group I) and 24 patients with stable angina (group II). CRP was assayed two times by the methods of ELISA and turbidimitery separately. Immundiffusion technique was used for cheking considerably different results between these 2 methods.
CRP levels were significantly elevated (ELISA method: normal <10 mg/dl) in the group I (mean=99.3±6 mg/dl) compared to the group II (mean=6.2±4 mg/dl) (p<0.001).
The data demonstrate a considerable increase of CRP levels in unstable angina. These findings suggest us that an inflammatory component may play an important role in the pathophysiology of active coronary artery disease.
