Esophageal perforation secondary to minor trauma: a case report

Thoracic traumas have high morbidity and mortality rates. Most of the esophageal injuries are of iatrogenic reasons. Esophageal perforation due to trauma is rare and is mostly seen at cardio-esophageal and pharyngo-esophageal junction. A twenty-five year old male patient was performed tube thoracostomy because of traumatic pneumothoraks for falling in supine position and the food that was given orally was seen coming from the tube after 24 hours. The patient had been transferred to our clinic and was performed thoracotomy. Chest cavity that was full of undigested food and pus was washed. Esophagus was observed to be torn approximately 7-8 cm above hiatus vertically full coat. Performing nasogastric drainage mucosal and muscle coats were sutured. The patient was given oral feeding at the 7th day and was discharged 8th day after surgery. There was no problems determined in the controls.
