The factors affecting the long-term success of arteriovenous fistulae for hemodialysis were evaluated in five patients. The sufficiency of circulation before establishing an arteriovenous fistula is of great relavence for a cardiovascular surgeon. Changes in the patients preoperative condition alters the strategy of the operation. The most important factor for long-term postoperative improvement of arteriovenous fistulae is training of the hemodialysis personnel. Invasive radiologists are also of important associates of cardiovascular surgeons to achieve success. It should be recalled that surgery for arteriovenous fistula confers a meaningful life on the patient. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach is emphasized.
