Methods: With the approval of the hospital ethics committee, patients hospitalized in the cardiac surgery clinic who were scheduled to undergo cardiac surgery were interviewed in detail about patient demographics by means of the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI). While the study group (n=50) received preoperative briefing, the control group (n=50) did not.
Results: No difference was observed between groups in terms of age, sex, marital status, income level, occupation, and place of birth (p>0.05). Similarly, no difference was observed between these variables and STAI scores. No difference was observed between groups in terms of pre STAI-I and pre STAI-II levels. The level of STAI-I in the study group was significantly reduced after briefing (p=0.015).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the presented study, it has been shown that anxiety was reduced with preoperative briefing of the patients.
