Background: This study aims to emphasize the significance of guidance provided with intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) for patients getting left ventricular assist device or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) installed transiently or permanently.

Methods: Intraoperative TEE findings of 26 patients with cardiomyopathy or severe acute cardiogenic shock, which required mechanical circulatory support (left ventricular assist device, ECMO), were recorded in our clinic between January 2012 and March 2014.

Results: Ventricular functions, and placement and effective functioning of the device were monitored with intraoperative TEE in patients receiving mechanical circulatory support. Required treatments and surgical corrections were performed with the guidance of TEE, and related data were recorded.

Conclusion: The evaluation of patients with intraoperative TEE may allow punctual and accurate identification of treatment approach and good hemodynamic monitorization, thus facilitating successful application of mechanical support systems.
