Between January 1990-June 1999, 8 patients have undergone excision of an intracardiac myxoma, which was located in the left atrium in 7 (87.50%) and in the right ventricle in 1 (12.50%). There were 5 female 3 male patients with a mean age of 42.62 (range, 10 to 60 years). Echocardiography confirmed the diagnosis in all patients. 5 of the myxomas were originated from the interatrial septum, 1 from the mitral valve annulus, 1 from free wall of the left atrium and 1 from right ventricle outflow truct. All the patients were treated surgically by using cardiopulmonary bypass and the tumours were excised radically with the endocardial origin of the tumour. After the removal of left atrial myxomas, the artificial defects were closed primarily in 4 and with a patch in 1 patient. The hospital mortality rate was 0.00%. Excision of the tumour resulted in clear clinical improvement. There was one late death (12.50%). It is concluded that excision of intracardiac myxomas is curative and long-term results are excellent.
