We plannet this study to evaluate how the centrifugal pump effect on the immune system
compares with the roller pump. A Contrifugal pump was used in 10 patients with ischemic heart
disease and a roller pump in another 10. Leucocyte count, leucocyte formula, opconication, NBT
reduction test, bactrericidal test and complement level (C3 and C4) wcre measured to show the
changes in the non-specific immune system. Changes in immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM and IgA)
were determined for humoral immuniry and E-rozette and EAC-rozette for cellular immunity.
We observed some disturbances in the immune system of all the patients during and after cardiopulmonary bypass. As a result, we couldn't determine any difference concerning non-specific,
humoral and cellular immunity in the two groups. New methods preventing immunosupression
are necessary and this is an important subject in the future of open heart surgery.
