Coarctation of Aorta

Coarctation of the aorta is a congenital entity causing hypertension in the upper extremities and can reach to life-threatening stages in the presence of associated cardiac anomalies.

Its incidence is 5-10 % of all congenital cardiac diseases. Surgical treatment is the only method of treatment.

34 aortic Coarctation cases have been opcrated in the İstanbul University, İstanbul Medical Faculty, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgcry Department betwecn 1983-1993. From those 19 had resection + end-to-end anastomosis, 12 had patch plasty, 2 had graft interposition, l had subclavian flap aortoplasty. Restenosis was observed in l patient in long-term follow-up. 2 of our cases developed persistent hypertension. No pscudoaneurysrn formation was seen.
