Chronic Constructive Pericarditis: Current Indications for Operation, Operative Risks

A retrospective analysis of the records of 82 patients who had chronic constrictive pericarditis (CCP) within the last 10 years were performed. Primarily, 38 patients had tuberculosis, 10 patients had rheumatologic disorders and 8 patients had uremia. Operation was performed through median sternotomy incision in all cases and 9 of them were rcquired cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). On operation, the antcrior pericardium was excised parallcl to the phrenic nerves on both side. The early mortality rate was %9.8 (8 patients). Mean follow-up time was 5.8+2.1 years, rangining from l year to 11 years. We conclude that pericardiectomy using midline sternotomy with or without CPB can be performed safely and can lead to long-term survival and good functional results.
