Background: To evaluate and to compare our results at the pectus carinatum operations.
Methods: During the last 20 years period, 18 children operated on for pectus carinatum were reviewed. Boy / girl ratio was 15 / 3, mean age of identify and operation of deformity was 7.2 ± 4.4 and 8.7 ± 5.2 years, respectively. Symmetrical deformity was observed in 12 (66.7%), asymmetrical in 4 (22.2%) and mix excavatum / carinatum in 2 (11.1%) patients. Operation technique was resection of overgrown costal cartilages bilaterally and transverse sternal osteotomy.
Results: Complication rate was 16.7% (pneumothorax 1, atelektasis 1, and tissue necrosis 1). Complications resolved without any sequella. Mean hospital stay was 7.6 ± 6.6 days. Deformity disappeared in all patients. Thorax bone growing was normal in follow up period of 3.1 ± 2.8 years (10 months 6 years). Early surgical correction of carinatum deformity achieves to maintain normal skeletal growing of the thorax and prevents negative consideration of patient about self body image.
