Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate our experience, success rate and the surgical technique in arteriovenous fistula operations for haemodialysis access.

Methods: Ninty-two patients operated for hemodialysis access between December 2000 and August 2001 were evaluated retrospectively for the type of operation, early and late complications.

Results: The most common type of operation performed in 59 patients (64.1%) was Brescio and Cimino type at the wrist region between radial artery and cephalic vein. The most distal site of the non-dominant arm was chosen according to the condition of the vessels and patients age. The patency of fistulas was 98.9% just after the operation, 96.7% after a week, 94.5% after a month and 91.3% after six months. The complication rate was 11.9% and the most common complication was thrombus formation.

Conclusion: The aim should be to get long duration of patency and productivity of the arteriovenous fistula.
