37 patients (36 with mediastinal lymphadenopathy and one with paratracheal mass)
whom have not been diagnosed by other diagnostic methods were subjected to mediastinoscopy for diagnostic purposes and satisfactory tissue diagnosis were obtained in 32 patients
between January 1992 - December 1994. Pathologic diagnosis of the biopsy specimens taken
during mediastinoscopy were sarcoidosis in 17 patients (46%), tuberculosis lymphadenitis
in 9 patients (24.3%7, non-hodgkin lymphoma in 3 patients (8.1%), hodgkin lymphoma in 2
(5.4%), undifferentiated carcinoma in one (2.7%), reactive hyperplasia in 4(10.8%), and adipose tissue in one patient (2.7%). Thus diagnostic value of mediastinoscopy was found to be
as high as 86,5% in patients in whom diagnosis was not obtained by other invasive and noninvasive methods.
