THERAPEUTIC OPTIONS FOR THE SUPERIOR VENA CAVA SYNDROME RESULTING FROM CANNULATION INJURIES IN PEDIATRIC CARDIAC SURGERY

Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is usually encountered in cardiac surgery following the correction of complex intracardiac anomalies as well as a result of superior vena cava injuries during direct caval cannulation. Superior vena cava syndrome following cardiac surgery is a life-threating emergency especially in the noenatal and infant age group. This pathology was obseved in the early period after cardiac surgery in two patients under one year-old. Both patients had had problems during superior vena cava cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass. The first patient underwent balloon dilatation of her superior vena cava in the catheterization laboratory while the second patient was taken back to the operating room for the enlargement of the superior vena cava by autologous pericardial patch, and SVCS findings regressed dramatically in both patients following the interventions. Both patients were symptom-free in the long-term controls.
