Comparison Of "Lipoprotein and Apolipoprotein Levels" and "The Extent of Coronary Artery Disease" in Men and Women Undergoing Coronary ByPass Surgery

In this paper, 37 patients (23 males-14 females) undergoing aortocoronary bypass surgery and 20 cases (10 males-10 females) as a control group, were studied for their total plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), apolipoprotein A1(Apo A1) and apolipoprotein B (Apo B) levels. The predictive value of these levels in coronary artery disease were assessed angiographically and peroperatively in the number of stennosed wessels, extent of atherosclerosis (coronary score) and internal diameters of the bypassed coronary arteries.

In both sexes, no correlation was found between coronary artery disease and the levels of triglycerides and LDL.

Cholesterol and Apo 1 levels in men, were significantly lower than that of control group, Also, the levels of Apo 1 and the internal diameter of the bypassed coronary arteries, were correlated in men.

There was a significant correlation between the levels of Apo 1 and B, and the extent of coronary artery disease (coronary score) in women. There was also a positively correlation between the levels of Apo B and the number of stenosed coronary arteries, in women.

In conclusion, total cholesterol, HDL, Apo A1/Apo B and Apo B levels are predictors of coronary artery disease in men. The extent of coronary stenosis in women was correlated with Apo A1 and B levels, and the number of diseased coronary arteries with Apo B levels. Apo A1 levels was thought to be the predictor of the internal diameter of the bypassed coronary arteries in men.
