Methods: Forty-seven rats were divided into 2 groups as control (Group 1) and study group (Group 2) and then each group was divided into 3 subgroups as t0, t1, and t2. To the rats in the study group, pentoxifylline 50 mg/kg was administered intravenously.
Results: Sialic acid, lactate and creatine kinase values were significantly higher in the duration of t1 indicating ischemia period and t2 indicating revascularization period when compared to t0. Total sialic acid values in the study group, which were increased during ischemia and revascularization, were found significantly lower than those of control group (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: We concluded that the lower values of total sialic acid in the study group might be due to the effect of pentoxifylline.
