Diabetic coronary artery disease is characterized by diffuse multivessel disease, small coronary arteries, and progressive nature. This type of coronary artery disease is also associated with high rates of restenosis compared to nondiabetic coronary artery disease. During the past five years drugeluting stents have provided promising results for preventing restenosis, which is currently the most important problem of percutaneous coronary interventions. However, in real life practice, bypass surgery is still more convenient for the majority of diabetic patients due to lesion characteristics and better long-term results.
