Robotically enhanced cardiac surgery is a relatively new
approach, with a steep learning curve. Sixty-two cardiac
operations have been performed in our institution using the
da Vinci robotic system since April 2004. Of these, three
were totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass grafting, representing
the first operations performed in this field in Turkey.
Surgery was accomplished only through ports, without any
surgical incisions. The patients had significant stenosis or
occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary
artery. At surgery, the left internal thoracic coronary artery
was anastomosed to the LAD artery. The mean durations of
anastomosis, cardiopulmonary bypass, and operation were 39,
71, and 281 minutes, respectively. One patient required revision
due to hemorrhage at the postoperative fourth hour. No
complications occurred in the remaining patients.
