Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare tumors originating from the mesenchymal cells of the submesothelial tissue of the pleura. The morphological criteria for the differentiation of benign solitary tumors from malignant ones is well established and widely accepted. Giant solitary fibrous tumors must especially be considered as being possibly malignant. The treatment of choice is surgical resection, and the completeness of the resection is the best prognostic factor. In this article, we present a case of a 57-year-old female with a giant solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura in the right hemithorax who underwent a complete resection of the lesion with a right lower lobectomy in light of literature findings.
