Division of patent ductus arteriosus(PDA) as approach of treatment is a suitable option because of recanalization problem. We operated on 14 patients with isolated PDA at our clinic between January 1994 and February 1996. The mean age 6.1 years (range, 1,5 to 18 years). There were 9(64%) cases of frequent recurrent infection, 1 (7%) case of postpartum dyspne as major symptoms.

Diagnosis of all patients were made by physical examination and echocardiography. Catheterization study was done in 8 cases to research additional pathology. Operation was made through standard posterolateral thoracotomy. Division was performed by 3 clamp (1 straight and 2 angled fine-toothed Pott’s) technique. There were no operative mortality and complications. Mean follow -up time of patients was 12.4 months (1-24 months). There were no early and /or late morbidity and mortality.

We believe that, particularly in the childhood and the adolescent, technique of division may be used safely to overcome late complications such as recurrence of ductal patency and false aneurysm.
