Background: This study aims to determine the opinion and suggestions of the patients undergoing cardiac surgery on informed consents given preoperatively.

Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in postoperative Department of Cardiovascular Surgery (CVS) between January 2012 and May 2012. Ninety-two patients who were scheduled for cardiac surgery were included. As data collection tools, Form-1 (including sociodemographic and medical characteristics of the patients) and Form-2 (including the opinions, suggestions and the given information), which were developed by the researcher, were used. The number (n) and percentage (%) for the count specified variables, the mean ± standard deviation for the measurement specified variables and chi-square test for the comparison of categorical variables were used.

Results: It was observed that the essential information for informed consents was provided to the majority of the patients in CVS department, where the study was conducted, and that the positive results were higher than the similar study results.

Conclusion: When the information and the informed consent are considered as a patient right within the responsibility of the health care personnel, we conclude that the information provided by the instructed team regarding the informed consent would be positive for the patients to provide professional and consistent communication on the information for informed consent.
