Background: This study aims to investigate the reliability and validity of the Barnason efficacy expectation scale (BEES) cardiac surgery version for the Turkish society.

Methods: The study was conducted on 120 patients (95 males, 25 females; mean age 60.1; range 34 to 81 years) who underwent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery at Medicine Faculty of Başkent University, Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit in an Inner Anatolian province. The BEES cardiac surgery version and a questionnaire were used to identify the descriptive features of the patients. The scale and questionnaire were re-administered to the patients four weeks later.

Results: The scale was presented for an expert opinion when the language validity was ensured and the content validity index was calculated as 0.85. Analysis revealed that the scale contained five factors which were different from the original, that it was suitable to obtain a total scale score by addition, and that there was no need to remove any of the items. A correlation was present between the test -retest scores for all scale items (r=0.818; p=0.000). The internal reliability coefficient (Cronbach-a) was calculated as 0.837 for the scale and 0.75-0.79 for the subscales.

Conclusion: Our study results suggest that the BEES cardiac surgery version was a reliable and valid scale for the Turkish society.
