The validity and reliability study of the Turkish version of the Cardiac Symptom Survey

Background: This study aims to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Cardiac Symptom Survey.

Methods: In this methodological study, the reliability and validity study of the survey was conducted, after the linguistic equivalence was examined. Between October 2013 and April 2014, “Cardiac Symptom Survey”, “Data Collection Form on the Socio-Demographic and Medical Information of Patients”, and “Adaptation of Myocardial Infarction Dimensional Assessment Scale” were administered to a total of 150 patients who underwent cardiac surgery and gave a consent to be involved in the study. Each score of the Cardiac Symptom Survey including frequency, severity, and interference with physical activity and enjoyment of life was separately evaluated.

Results: Participants who medical diagnosis and the duration of treatment related in features according to distribution was 74.7% coronary artery disease. Each scores of Cardiac Symptom Survey that including frequency, severity, interference with physical activity and enjoyment of life are separately evaluated and the test-retest of symptoms Cronbach’s alpha values are calculated between 0.87-0.99.

Conclusion: Our study results suggest that the Turkish version of the Cardiac Symptom Survey is valid and reliable for the Turkish population. We believe that the Cardiac Symptom Survey can offer a significant contribution to the identification and evaluation of symptoms in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, as well as to the symptoms management, and to the process of nursing care.
