Bovine pericardium is widely used in bioprosthetic heart valve fabrication. Generally, the calcification of bovine pericardium pre-treated with glutaraldehyte causes the clinical failure of the valve. Our goal was to determine the effects of the chemical agents on the elasticity and firmness of the bovine pericardium. We tested four types of bovine pericaridal samples. Our results showed that, the pre-treatment of the bovine pericardium during two hours with 98% glycerine+4% formaldehyde did not change the properties of the pericardium;the pre-treatment with 98% glycerine had increased the elasticity, but diminished the firmness; the pre-treatment with 0.625% glutaraldehyde + 4% formaldehyde had increased the elasticity and the firmness of the pericardium.
