From 12.8.1987 to 29.12.1988 102 carotid carotid endarterectomies were performed to 87 patients in the vascular surgery clinic of Marienhospital Hamm-Germany. The indications of surgery were; more than %70 stenosis in the asymptomatic patients, up to %50 stenosis and the existence of ulcerated plaques in the symptomatic patient. All cases were given Aspirin 100 to 500 mg/day postoperatively. The 5 year survival rate is evaluated in this study.

At the end of 5 years %85 (73-87) of the patients were alive with no case of stroke. Of the 14 deaths the reason was myocardial infarction in 6, stroke in 4, malignancy in 3. The cause of death was unknown in the remaining case.

The mortality rate due to stroke in our carotid endarterectomy cases was found to be %4.6. This observation is compared with the results of other series of the literature and it is determined that the 5 year mortality rate due to cerebrovascular diseases is reduced by carotid endarterectomy.
