On three groups (A,D,C)eachcontaining 10 patients operated on for coronary artery disease arvalvular heart disease the effect of pretreatement with deferoxamine on complement activation and leucocyte sequestration in pulmonary vascular bed were observed.
Preoperatively the patiens in group A were given atotal dose of 1.8 g allopurinol and the patients in group D were given 15 mg/kg deferoxamine.Group C was the control group. For eachtatient serum level of C3, plasma level of lipid peroxide before and after CPB and the leucocyte count-formula of the right and left atrium at the end of the CPB were determined.
Even there was no difference of leucocyte sequestrion in pulmonary bed, allopurinol and deferoxamine were found to be effective in prevention of the deleterious effects of CPB by scavenging, or inhibiting the formation of oxygen free radicals.
