Background: There is some evidence that chronic inflammation may have a potential role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. But the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) is conflicting. In our study we examined the relationship between seropositivity to Helicobacter pylori and CAD.

Methods: In this study anti-Helicobacter pylori IgG was determined by in-house ELISA in preoperative serums from 38 patients with CAD. Thirty eight healthy people were recruited as the control group.

Results: Twenty nine of the patients (%76.31) and 26 of the controls (%68.42) have anti-Helicobacter pylori IgG. There were no association between the results of the patients with CAD and controls.

Conclusions: These data do not support the hypothesis that infection with Helicobacter pylori might be a major risk factor for CAD.
