For quality of life pleural effusion should be eliminated in patients with malign pleural effusion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the results of our video assisted thoracoscopic talc pleurodesis in malign pleural effusion. Between January, 1993- July , 2000 the procedure of video assisted thoracoscopic talc pleurodesis has been applied to 69 patients at the department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in Erciyes University. There were 21 women, 48 men; ages ranged from 23 to 78 (mean 54.2).

With the aid of a pulverizer, 2 gr talc was pulverized into 27 patients under local anesthesia, and into 42 patients under general anesthesia with one lung ventilation. Time of the operation ranged from 15 to 63 minutes (mean 42.3 minutes). There was no mortality. In the early postoperative period 2 patients constituted the morbidity: 2.8 %. During the early follw-up period a second pleurodesis was needed in 4 patients. Length of stay in hospital was between 2-8 days (mean 4.3 days). It is concluded that the application of 2 gr talc with the aid of videothoracoscopy in malign pleural effusion is an inexpensive procedure and reduces the length of stay.
