Background: In this study we tried to search the topical vasodilator effect of papaverine, verapamil, nitroglycerine and nitroprusside during the preparation of internal thoracic artery.

Methods: Segments of 0.5 cm internal thoracic artery of 10 patients undergone coronary artery bypass graft operation were prepared and divided into 5 groups. Group I was control group (plasebo, by saline); internal thoracic artery (ITA) was treated in Group II by papaverine, in Group III by verapamil, in Group IV by nitroglycerine and in Group V by nitroprusside. All ITAs were examined under light microscope.

Results: Endothelial cell loss and ITA lumen diameter was evaluated by light microscope. For every group mean lumen diameter was calculated. There was no statistically significant difference between all groups and placebo group (p > 0.05).

Conclusion: Regarding to our findings it is not necessary to use vasodilatator drugs while preparing internal thoracic artery.
