Background: Atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass surgery is the most common arrhythmia. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the current incidence of atrial fibrillation, identify its perioperative risk factors in coronary artery bypass surgery patients.

Methods: Between September 1998 and May 1999, atrial fibrillation was determined in 25 (19.23%) of consecutive130 patients undergone coronary artery bypass surgery. There were 104 male (80%) and 26 female (20%) with a mean age of 60 ± 7.6 and 59 ± 7.2 years, respectively.

Results: In patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation ratio of 70 age and upper was 32%. However, this ratio was 5.7% in patients with postoperative sinus rhythm (p < 0.001). Preoperative use of calcium channel blockers was higher in the patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation compared to the patients with normal sinus rhythym [respectively 11/25 (%44) to 18/105 (%17.1); p = 0.008].

Conclusion: Age and preoperative use of calcium channel blockers are risk factors for postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery.
