Methods: Between September 1998 and May 1999, atrial fibrillation was determined in 25 (19.23%) of consecutive130 patients undergone coronary artery bypass surgery. There were 104 male (80%) and 26 female (20%) with a mean age of 60 ± 7.6 and 59 ± 7.2 years, respectively.
Results: In patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation ratio of 70 age and upper was 32%. However, this ratio was 5.7% in patients with postoperative sinus rhythm (p < 0.001). Preoperative use of calcium channel blockers was higher in the patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation compared to the patients with normal sinus rhythym [respectively 11/25 (%44) to 18/105 (%17.1); p = 0.008].
Conclusion: Age and preoperative use of calcium channel blockers are risk factors for postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery.
