Background: Arterial switch operations are the current treatment of choice in transposition of the great arteries (D-TGA). Coronary translocation is the most important factor affecting the morbidity and mortality.

Methods: From January 1997, 40 cases of D-TGA underwent arterial switch operation. Seven patients with intact ventricular septum who could be diagnosed beyond the neonatal period underwent a two stage arterial switch operation. 8 patients with complex D-TGA associated with a VSD underwent arterial switch and VSD closure operation. 26 cases were neonate.

Results: 2 patients died peroperatively. 4 patients died postoperatively because of prolonged intubation, sepsis and low cardiac output. In the last 15 cases, there was only 1 patients died.

Conclusions: We are believing that with increasing experience arterial switch operation can be performed with acceptable mortality.
