The use of classical shunt techniques during carotid
endarterectomy may sometimes impede carotid artery
surgery. For this purpose, a new and simple shunt procedure
can easily be performed by placing the arterial blood flow
from the femoral artery catheter into the internal carotid
artery with a blood set without using any three-way
stopcock. Since a flow of 250-300 ml/min is provided
during the surgery through this shunt placed with the
blood set, adequate brain protection can be obtained, and
neurological deficits are avoided.
