Thymic cysts are rare benign lesions which can be
observed in neck and mediastinum. In this article, we
report a two-day-old patient with postnatal respiratory
failure which is a rare condition. Pathologic examination
revealed a cystic structure located in upper mediastinum
and right thorax which caused mediastinal shift and
atelectasis in right lung. Mediastinal cyst was excised with
right lateral thoracotomy and was reported as thymic cyst.
The fact that patient was operated while two-day-old and
recovered is a rare condition in the literature. According
to our observations, excision of cystic lesions in babies
developing acute respiratory failure and with deteriorating
health condition may be life saving.
