In patients with a functional single ventricle, the introduction of the Fontan operation and its recent modifications have proved to be an improtant step towards physiological correction. Although its early and late results have long been debated, the Fontan operation has dramatically changed the management strategies and outcome in these patients. In this review, the course, prognosis, complications and late functional results after the Fontan operation are presented.
