Background: This study aims to obtain high concentration of growth factor through an animal experiment with platelet rich plasma (PRP) after tracheotomy and enhance tissue repair with the cellular response which will occur.

Methods: The study included 30 New Zealand white rabbits with an average weight of 4-5.5 kg. We separated the rabbits into three groups. In the first group (sham group), we did not implement invasive procedure on the trachea. In the second group (control group), anastomosis after incision was perfomed between the ninth and 10th tracheal rings. In the third group (PRP group), we implemented PRP to anastomosis region and inside the cartilage.

Results: None of the animals died after surgery. The granulation in the control and PRP sections was remarkable in the macroscopic examination. Fibrosis and neovascularization were more distinct in the PRP group compared to other groups in the microscopic examination. Tracheal stenosis after anastomosis was lesser in the PRP group compared to the other groups (p2=0.001).

Conclusion: Platelet rich plasma is a safe autologous product in tracheotomy which may reduce complications and possible tracheal stenosis after surgery.
