Venous thromboembolism or commonly known as deep
venous thrombosis (DVT) is an important cause of mortality
and morbidity. In advanced age group, it has an
incidence of up to 1% in developed countries. Deep venous
thrombosis most frequently arises from the lower extremity
and pelvic veins. Since DVT can be found in about 70%
of cases with pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), and
about half of the DVT cases develop PTE, these two can be
regarded as a single clinicopathologic entity. The methods
used in the treatment of classical DVT undergo alterations
in parallel with the evolution of alternative treatment
options and publication of comparative results of clinical
studies. In this article, we aimed to review DVT in the
light of current guidelines. A timely and correct treatment
approach is essential to minimize mortality and morbidity
rates associated with DVT.
