Forensic reporting is one of the fundamental responsibilities of the physician. The practice of forensic medicine changes in line with regulatory changes and current requirements. The first guide to assess criminal injuries, which are defined in the Turkish Penal Code, in terms of forensic medicine was prepared in 2005, and updated in July 2013. This review aimed to classify the forensic medicine assessments in the field of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, and demonstrate legal and medical concepts which serve as basis for practice. Samples and edited cases were presented to identify problems which may be encountered by physicians in terms of practice, and demonstrate the applicability of the concepts. With this study, a resource was created which may be used by thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons and residents in medico legal cases, and the requirement to discuss and improve the assessments involving the field was emphasized.
